Dublin Salsa Festival Weekend 2000

The Dublin Salsa festival has come and gone. But it will never be forgotten until next year when we hope to be even better. The whole weekend was fantastic. The welcome party on Friday Night had Salsaros from Bristol, Bath, London, Cardiff, Derry, Cork, Boston and of course our loving Dubliners. Saturday started off with different Salsa Classes with an array of Teacher Talent, Carmel (Ireland, Salsa Villa), Ivan (Salsa Villa), Robert (London), Fire (London), BeeDee (Bruxells) and our Main Man Dr. Rumba. Special bands of the festival were Latino House (originally Colombia but now based in Cork) and Latin Soul (Dublin).

Dublin Salsa Festival Weekend '99

Ireland's first ever Salsa Festival was held at the Ormond Quay's Hotel on Saturday the first weekend of June and culminated with a performance by Cuban band Palenque at Salsa Villa in the Temple Bar Music Centre. Palenque are "one of the best Cuban bands around", according to Dr. Rumba. "They play good music, but also music you can dance to. They are also great entertainers. When they go on stage they want to make sure everyone enjoys themselves." Other activities included:
DJ Delroy DJ Eddy (Power FM)
DJ Rice (Jazz FM)
DJ Femo (Salsa Villa London)
and you may have noticed this name before - DJ Dr. Rumba
Classes and workshops in salsa, cha cha and merengue hosted by ten Afrimania teachers.
Choreographed performances by Dr. Rumba and his Afrocubana dance troupe.
Percussionist display on Grafton Street and Henry Street.
The First Irish Salsa Dance Open Championships were also held at the festival. Supercool and swivel-hipped Joe Benson and Kelly Anne Mooney swept to victory and second place went to Fernando Gutierrez and Suzanne Casey, while Christopher and Lea picked up third spot. Donal and Karen came fourth. There was also a merengue competition and the same dancers figured highly again. Kelly Ann and Fernando collected silverware with top spot followed by Christopher and Melissa and Donal and Karen.
